Paw Prints with a Purpose

Painter Alison Vernon and Clay Artist Cindy Best have created Paw Prints with a Purpose. A portion of each sale is donated to help families struggling to pay pet bills. It is a wonderful cause that is helping families and their pets. The girls have ask me to photograph several of their creations for the website and new catalog due out soon.

This is update of an image I created 2 years ago. It has been converted to B&W with a brown tone added. I have also added a texture to the image to give it the classic look of an old print. A pinstripe was added along with dodging and burning. This image may make it into print compitition at NHPPA annual convention in April. The original image is below.

Winter Abstracts

The calender says it is January 9th, but it looks like late April. Not a flake of snow anywhere . This image I captured a couple of years ago from the chair in the Sun Bowl at Mount Sunapee. Someone had been skiing out of bounds. Enough snow that year to cover the brook, rocks and stumps. Hopefully it starts dumping soon or we may have to sacrafice someone. It is sad to see Kodak going down the drain. I will continue to shot black & White film till there is none.

Classic Black & White Images

I am working with The Hair Station in New London creating headshots for all the girls that work there. In keeping with the motiff of the salon we captured the images in black and white. I have tried to capture the feel of the classic Hollywood images with the narrow depth of field, high contrast images and retouching The images will be printed using traditional silver geleton paper. We will be offering clients the option of creating images in classic black and white in 2012. Look for more details to come.

End of the Year review.

What a year it has been. It started slow and is finishing with a bang. It is an honer to create the images I do for all my clients. What does 2012 have in store for Gary Summerton Photography. First we are in the planning stages to add a dedicated home studio in Sunapee. This will allow for better customer sevice, better images. We will be adding custom framing to our line of beautiful print options. Third I plan on completing my certification process with the Professional Photographers Association of America. Less than 8% of all professionals enrolled pass this demanding program. as we go forward I am going to focus my work on fine art portraiture with an emphasis on families, high school seniors, and children. So again thank you to everyone who has supportted us in 2011. 2012 looks to be even better. I have posted some images from my portfolio I am submitting to PPA for your enjoyment.

Latest images from Julia Koumrian Dance Recital session. I love how this image show a confident Julia ready for her big show. This image shows a traditional female pose with her back to the main light and her body turned toward the camera.. This lighting for this session is with a 2 light set-up, the main light is 3 by 4 soft box camera left for short or rembrandt lighting and the hair light comes in from behind and to the left of Julia. I try to keep my lights all coming from the same side. The backdrop is a new canvas from studio dynamics.

Photo Restoration

My post this week deals with photo restoration. I am working on a few images my Mum gave me of the 2 of them when they were dating. Imagine our parents actually used to date. I am greatful to have them and be able to restore them to their full glory. While these images will never win any ppa print compition ribbons. These imges are important for our family history. 90 percent of all pictures taken today are never printed. With the digital era going full blast ahead there are fewer and fewer photographic iamges in shoe boxes laying around the house. What will our grandkids and their kids have for photographic memeries? Image on the left is the original, image on right is the restored image. I try to avoid offering any digital versions of my work to clients becouse I believe I am doing them a disservice by handing them a cd of images. I prefer to offer clients wall & desk portraits. This will allow future generations to peak into the past and enjoy their family history.

Photoshop Super Monday Class

I had the great oppotunity to spend a day with master photographer & photoshop expert Ella Carlson of EllaPrints. It was a great way to spend a rainy Monday studying the latest in photoshop. Topics covered included:

HDR, retouching, collages, selections, layers, masks, and on ,and, on. To say the least my brain was hurting at the end of the day. The two images here are examples of a fine art pinstripe that is added to images for PPA print compition. The first image of Andrew shows a double pinstripe, second image shows a single pinstripe. Leaf and Rectangle

Leaf and rectangle has been juried into 20 Days in May Photography International. Open to photographers from New England. Artists where asked to submit images that give emphasis to unusual point of view; works that communicate or express an idea that goes beyound the photographic representation of objects or places. Bruce Parsons is the Curator. The exhibit will be held at Colby Sawyer's Fine and Performing Arts Center from May 11th till the 31st.

High School Senior

I recently photographed Andrew for his high school senior portraits. I had invisioned the images before our final collaborations. I feel we were successful in capturing Andrew's spirit and personality. Most photographers who call them selves pros could not create this simple but yet beautiful lighting pattern. It is good to be back posting. I have been out following recent knee surgery. This image is from a recent commercial project I did for Concepts NREC out of White River Junction, VT. Image one is lit from above with an 7 foot translucient panel with a fill light from camera right. Second image is is the same shot but with a red gel added to the fill light.
